The Original Longboard #1
The Original Longboard #1
It didn't take long before I wanted to do it again and improve on it. I liked the narrowness on the ends but wanted to give it some more body in the middle. Big curves were added and a few iterations later, tweaking the edges and proportions, I've got a board I think is functional, elegant, and provides a superlative canvas for displaying visually expressive wood designs.
Though it was unintentional, it does look like a surfboard. And that's really cool, actually, because the material used on this is western red cedar (my favorite wood). It's a beautiful, lightweight, durable wood that is easy to work with and was a wood long favored in the construction of the vintage hawaiian surfboards. Bringing this all together, it felt fitting to not only make a surfboard but to use WRC to give it some authenticity and connect with its history
But wait, there's more! This board is more than just a visually striking piece of functional art. The herringbone maple inlay down the center adds a touch of warmth and character, and its origin as reclaimed hardwood flooring salvaged from my friend's home I think gives the board a personal and meaningful touch.
Materials
Materials
The bodies of all my boards are solid wood.
The bottom half is a laminated hardwood meant to help stand up to wear and tear.
Each board has a food-safe, cured-lacquer finish. This helps protect against liquids and brings out the luster in the wood.
